Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the globe by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching turning 1. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the adverse comments from others annihilate his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.

Phil began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a teaching period and winning was not a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an eternal love for the game of poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
