Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His papa showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn everything he could about poker. Phil would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not let the negative comments from others kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable love for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his achievements. Phil knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
