Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the negative comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the best poker players in the world.

Phil began competing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he defeated many of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and an eternal love for poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is very humble about his success. Phil admits to making errors every single session of poker and always strives to get better.

Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
